Climate control isn't optional for everything
A standard Mesa storage unit is an uninsulated metal box. In July, interior temperatures routinely pass 110°F, and the swing between day and night is what does the damage — glue joints loosen, veneer lifts, screens delaminate, and anything wax or vinyl deforms.

Size up if you're between two options. Paying a few dollars more per month beats discovering on loading day that the door won't close.
Packing so nothing comes out worse than it went in

Everything goes in a box or a bin — loose items get crushed, and a uniform stack uses half the floor space.

Label two sides of every box, not the top. Once the unit is stacked you can only read the side facing the aisle.

Leave a walkway down the middle to the back wall. You will need something from the back sooner than you think.

Lift furniture off the concrete on pallets or 2x4s, and cover with breathable moving blankets rather than plastic sheeting, which traps condensation.

Never store flammables, propane, paint, batteries or perishables — facilities prohibit them and the Arizona heat makes them genuinely dangerous.

Photograph the loaded unit before you lock it. It settles insurance questions and reminds you what's actually in there.

How big a storage unit do I need?

When in doubt, size up — repacking a too-small unit costs more than the extra monthly rent.
Do I need climate control in Arizona?
For anything that warps, cracks, melts or fades — wood furniture, electronics, vinyl records, artwork, candles, leather, photographs, musical instruments — yes. Mesa unit interiors regularly exceed 110°F in summer. Metal tools, plastic bins and outdoor gear are usually fine in a standard unit.
